Nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, the subarctic archipelago of Faroe Islands is made up of 18 islands of volcanic origin. Fascinating and unspoiled, the Faroe Islands have been shaped by the forces of the wind and the ocean and are an ornithological paradise, home to thousands of puffins.

LO SAPEVI CHE?
Il pulcinella di mare (Fratercula arctica) è un abile pescatore. Ha un becco triangolare lungo circa 4,5 cm, che può contenere circa 15-18 pesci alla volta.

Ha un piumaggio che lo protegge dal freddo e che è impermeabile, grazie a uno speciale “olio” che vieneprodotto da una ghiandola simile a quello dei pinguini e di altri uccelli marini.
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
The puffin (Fratercula arctica) is a skilled fisherman. It has a triangular beak about 4.5 cm long, which can hold about 15-18 fish at a time.
It has a plumage which protects it from the cold and which is waterproof, thanks to a special "oil" which is produced by a gland similar to that of penguins and other sea birds.
LO SAPEVI CHE?
I pulcinella di mare possono immergersi fino a 60 m di profondità e volare a una velocità di oltre 80 km/h. Sbattono le loro ali fino a 400 volte al minuto!

Devono sbattere le ali così tante volte in quanto sono più pesanti di altri uccelli, poichè non hanno ossa cave (pneumatiche) ma piene. Questo rende più difficile e faticoso il volo, ma li favorisce quando si immergono e nuotano in profondità nell'oceano.
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
Atlantic puffins can dive to depths of about 60 meters and fly at a speed of more than 80 km/h by flapping their wings 400 times per minute!

They need to flap their wings so fast because they are heavier than other birds, as their bones are not hollow, but solid. This makes flying more difficult and tiring, but favors them when they dive and swim deep in the ocean as far as they do.
